I have just become a forth year student of the Safety and Security Studies program in The Hague University of Applied Studies. My age is only 20 years old, however, I am already able to highlight several skills, including communication with other people, leadership abilities, presentation skills, analytical abilities, planning of actions, and problem-solving abilities. Moreover, I can operate alone and as a team player.
Education
Bachelors studies: Safety and Security Studies, the third year of a program out of four.
About the education:
This program provides understanding of the field of Safety and Security, and ability to operate in it. This involves different research papers, projects, analytical papers, subjects and lectures related to Safety and Security. Here are some of the subjects and courses successfully completed by me:
- Civil war and conflicts studies.
- Crisis and disaster management.
- International relations and geopolitics.
- National security systems.
I am very interested in intelligence activities and now studying a set of subjects with a name Applied Intelligence. This involves different intelligence techniques and gathering disciplines, such as OSINT, SIGINT, GEOINT, HUMINT, FININT and many other less known methods.
Skills:
1) Communication
The Hague University of Applied Sciences has open-day events three times a year, when people can come and receive information about different programs of the university from lecturers and students. Thus, I attended 6 last events and was representing my own program.
As a team player, I am always communicate and trying to avoid any misunderstandings. Moreover, I always try to solve any conflicts and do some extra job if it assists someone in my group.
At this moment, I can communicate in three different languages. I am fluent in Ukrainian, Russian and the level of my English is between Pre-advanced and Advanced levels, but closer to the Advanced level.
2) Leadership abilities
My program has four different projects per year, where groups of students work together to provide a solution that can assist a client that comes to the university and asks to solve a problem. These clients come from different fields and are Siemens, Tesla, Dutch Ministry of Defense, Police and so on. Consequently, I had to be a leader in several projects. Initially, I wasn’t chosen as a leader, but I had to occupy that position because otherwise my group would fail to provide a sufficient outcome. I am not a leader in a working group, but if it is required to be a leader for a short period of time, I will do my best at this group-position.
3) Presentations skill
In my university students always have presentations that are graded and lectures with a name “Professional abilities” are present, where students are taught how to make successful presentations, and how to behave in different situations. I always volunteer and make presentations any time that is possible. I always try to improve my skills and will do any presentation that is required, even if the topic is completely unfamiliar to me.
I am currently a member of a Safety and Security Studies marketing team that finds different ways how to improve our program in the university and how to deliver a sufficient message about the nature of our program to potential students that are in a process of searching for a bachelor program. As a member of this team, I attended six last opened day events in my university and assisted our program authorities to improve the website design, where in one of the sections you can even see my photo with comments about my program.
I also attended an educational exhibition in Kiev (Ukraine) in April 2018, where I had to discuss several topics, perform a short presentation about my life in the Netherlands, and provide information about my program.
4) Analytical abilities
In the future I am planning to be a security analyst in terms of military and national security sectors and fields. Thus, it involves different analytical reports and abilities to critically analyze any provided situation to you. For example, I wrote a number of qualitative reports about current conflict situation in Syria, Ukraine and several other conflict zones. In other words, such reports require you to be able to analyze, discuss, predict different situations and outcomes and plan how to prevent similar conflicts in the future.
As I’ve discussed earlier, my program has different Projects that also require to analyze different situations because problems can be of different complexity and sometimes you need to brainstorm the problem alone or with your team-members.
Safety and Security Studies also teaches you how to conduct a research and how to provide a qualitative Research paper.
5) Planning of actions
Today, I have too many different deadlines and in order to provide reports and pass my exams, I have to plan my actions and be able to have some free time. Thus, I am always trying to plan everything in advance and strict deadline or a pressure of time is not a problem for me.
6) Problem-solving skills
My projects always include a time when the group faces difficulties in communication, deadlines and responsibilities. Consequently, I am always trying to solve such issues. If it is possible, I am trying to do that in a peaceful way. However, sometimes you have to ask for assistance from the lecturers.
